Description of Quilt Unit: This unit leads to the study of art, history and mathematics. Language activities focus on descriptive writing, story writing, historical writing. The feelings and descriptions of characters are pursued and a quilt is used to depict a favourite story. Art activities feature design and creativity. Math, science and technology explore area, shape, pattern and perimeter. Introduction of tangrams and tesselation and experimenting to find the properties of fabric.

Maryann Kovalski is a much loved author of children's books. Her illustrations are favourites with all children. In this unit there are suggestions for activities across the curriculum for books: The Wheels on the Bus, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Brenda and Edward, The Big Storm, Grandma's Secret, Pizza for Breakfast, and Alice and the Birthday Giant. There are math problems, science experiments, language arts projects, and art and craft ideas.

You will find a plethora of activities to keep your class engaged and interested. There are suggestions for creative letters, character role playing, post office projects and sequencing fun. There is also a Rubric to track the progress of each child.
